A few weeks ago we told you about our new Police Community Support Officers, Liz Manton and John Tighe. Liz and John cover both Lower Gornal and Coseley, and last week they were visited by Dudley North MP Ross Cranston, who went walking with them in Coseley on a fact finding visit.

A clearly impressed MP said afterwards: "One of the main aims of this new type of Police Officer is to have a very visible presence in the communities they serve. Dudley was chosen as one of those areas in the West Midlands, following pressure from me. It is clear that Liz and John are becoming well known and increasingly integrated into the community. During my time with them in Coseley, I saw local people welcome them."

Police Community Support Officers are a different type of police officer who will help prevent crime and reassure local communities and patrol the streets on foot. Recruited from the local community, they will have access to police communications. As their role is different, they will not carry batons, handcuffs or CS spray. However, their powers do enable them to confiscate alcohol and tobacco, issue fixed penalty notices for some minor offences, remove abandoned vehicles, require the name and address of anyone behaving anti-socially, and carry out road checks with a constable.

‘I was heartened to see these officers being so welcome on the streets" continued Mr. Cranston, particularly as there had been opposition to them originally. I am pressing for more of them in Dudley North." -->
