Summerhouse 1 Afc Gornal 8

Still smarting from their opening day defeat to Cookley the previous week, Richard upton took his troops to face Summerhouse FC last Sunday. Upton was forced into one change from last week's match; Gavin Atkins got his chance in the centre of the park due to the absence of Steven Malpass

From the off Gornal clearlyintended to put last week's misery out of their minds. It took only ten minutes for Gavin Parkes to head home a Matt Hollis cross and send Gornal on their way to victory.

The game was a very one sided affair and it ws no real shock when Dave Jones made it 2-0 when he curled home a free kick. Soon after it was 3-0; a superb passing move ended when centre half Chris Johnson slotted home after a neat interchange between Parkes, Jones and Lee Harrison. Gornal added one more before the interval, Parkes claiming his second of the match as he nodded home Jones's cross.

The second half began slowly and it looked as though Gornal had taken their foot off the gas. Then, as so many times in the past, Lee Harrison released Jones and he slipped the ball under the home keeper to make it 5-0. The race was on now between Jones and Parkes to claim the 1st hatrick of the season, and it was Parkes who got it. Harrison picked up Jones' lay off, slotted a ball into the path of Parkes and the rest as they say is history.

Gornal then however contrived to gift Summerhouse a goal. Summer signing Mark Fullwood, making his debut in goal, sliced a Mart Collingride backpass straight to the Summerhouse striker and he duly made it 6-1.

Dave Jones did complete his hatrick as he crashed home a left footed effort from 6 yards out, following more good work by Harrison.

I must mention here the woeful goal attempts at this point by Matt Hollis, Lee Harrison, Gav Parkes, Mart Collingride, Luke Middleton and Richard Upton- twice, all of which would have looked good on 'You've Been Framed'!

Goal number 8 came with minutes to go. Matt Hollis beat five or six men on his journey from the half way line to the opposing 18 yard box, but he the unselfishly slipped it to Dave Jones who again provided a cool finish.

So 8-1 it ended, and signs that Afc Gornal will again be in for a good season. Not getting carried away though - the opposition weren't good but some of Gornal's football definitely was.
