Peacocks Squad

There was little sign of last season's title winning squad in the Gornal first team that turned out for an informal pre-season friendly game at Ellowes Hall School last Tuesday (20th).

The side so carefully assembled by now departed Joint Managers Tony Wall and Martin Thomas seems to have largely disappeared with them. In its place, new Manager Simon Williams appears to be drawing heavily have on his extensive Youth League experience to blood a number of young players this season, including left footed striker Bowes, who scored forty odd goals for Gornal Youth in 2002/03.

Our man on the spot at the Ellowes game (thanks Steve!) watched the first team net a hatful against the youth side. Only midfielder Bates, whose association with the Peacocks pre-dates the arrival of Thomas and Wall, and his partner in the centre of the park Edwards was recognisable from last season. The majority of the remaining first team spots were filled by last year's successful youth crop, with Bowes helping himself to a hat trick or more in a double figures win.

Though undeniably talented, these young players may find the going tough in the West Midlands Premier League, particularly in the early weeks while they adjust to the quality of opposition.

An early indication of form will come on Saturday 24th, with a friendly away to Old Hill.
