Michael Owen 1948-2003
We are sad to report the death of popular Gornal accountant Michael Owen, at the early age of
55. Mick died very suddenly last weekend, although he had not enjoyed good health for some time. We have not yet
confirmed cause of death, but understand that it was a respiratory problem.
Mick's Abbey Street offices are next door to ours, and we got to know him well over the last two years.
He lived on his own in the village, but enjoyed going out to watch the Wolves, or share a drink with friends at the
Red Lion or Baggeridge Social Club.
In business, Mick was generally happy just to make enough for himself and his employees, and was never the
type to pursue profit relentlessly. However, he had recently resolved to expand his operations in 2004,
and spoke enthusiastically to us, just a few days before he passed away, of his plans for the New Year.
This has left us all the more shocked by the news of his death.
Mick had time for everyone, and was always friendly and attentive in conversation. We will miss him, and extend our
condolences to his family.
