Tipton Street Methodist Church

A planning application has been submitted to the Council in the latest attempt to resolve once and for all the future of the Grade II listed Tipton Street Methodist Church building.

Last year a plan to convert the church into luxury flats was defeated by local campaigners, but now a building firm, Desmond P. O'Neil Ltd., says that it wishes to use the shell as office space, while retaining its streetscape and character.

It appears to be generally, if reluctantly, agreed locally that the 150 year old church is unlikely ever to return to its original purpose as a place of worship. However, the nature of its future use remains a matter of controversy, with particular concern voiced over the status of graves and artifacts such as the pews, 1906 pipe organ, and stained glass memorial to founder George Church.

Further historical information about the Tipton Street Primitive Methodist Chapel appears at Sedgley Local History Society's website (click here).
