COTWALL speed limit campaign

Dudley North MP Ian Austin is calling on council bosses to introduce lower speed limits on Cotwall End Road between Sedgley and Gornal.

The Dudley North MP is backing a campaign by the Friends of Cotwall End for lower limits – the scene of several recent “near misses” and where a number of badgers have recently been killed.

Council officials have told the group that work would require a change to street lighting and would be unlikely to be considered due to costs but Austin has written to the council urging them to introduce the lower speed limits.

The speed limit is 30 miles per hour outside the houses, but then rises to the national speed limit along the road where it is at its narrowest and where there are a series of blind bends, making driving very dangerous. Children will be using the area more during the forthcoming summer holidays. Dog walkers and horse riders are also at risk (us joggers too! - Ed)

Ian Austin said:

“I’m very concerned about this stretch of road. I use it regularly myself when driving around the constituency and it has always struck me as very dangerous because the road is so narrow and you cannot see what is coming in the opposite direction due to all the blind bends.

“The speed limit is way too high and I’m surprised the council are saying they can’t do the work because of costs.

“What will they say if there is a serious accident or – god forbid – someone is injured?”
