Can Yampy readers help to locate the family of young soldier Ronald Smith, who was tragically killed in Palestine in 1948?

Local history and roots researcher Cassy has been contacted by Ronald's army comrade Denis Williams of Tamworth, who relates the following heart-rending story:

Ron served with me in the 17th Field Squadron, Royal Engineers. In 1948 we were stationed in Jerusalem.

Whilst returning back to camp on 10th April 1948 our truck received a mortar bomb, killing both Ron who was sitting alongside myself and another pal who sat the other side of me. I was wounded.

In hindsight, when I returned home I should have visited Ron's parents, but I could not face them at the time. I enclose a photograph of Ron taken on the Jaffa Rd. shortly before his death. He is in the foreground facing the camera. He was just 18.

Dennis would like to pass on this photograph to someone in Ron's remaining family. If you are a relation, or can help in the search, please email us at admin@yampy.co.uk.
